TVNZ News Release - Tauranga Boys' Olympians
Tauranga upholds reputation as
nursery for NZ's finest sailors
Tauranga has gained a
formidable reputation as the nursery for some of our finest dinghy sailors,
including gold medalist Peter Burling and bronze medalist Sam Meech.
The well-stocked boathouse at
the city's biggest yacht club is evidence to locals' claims the sailing success
is "no coincidence".
Another ingredient in the water
is the enthusiastic role of Tauranga Boys' College, the school which Burling,
Meech and Jason Saunders all attended at the same time. Card payment fee of
Remarkably, the school's old boy
presence extends beyond the three sailors, with ex-students including rower
Mahe Drysdale, whitewater kayaker Mike Dawson and another kayaker Bryden
Nicholas representing the Cook Islands.
Proud principal Robert Mangan
says the school is "basking in reflective glory".
"We're riding the crest of
the wave in terms of success."
